Abstract:
Alternative oxidase (AOX) is one of the terminal oxidases of the mitochondrial electron transport chain,which is widely distributed in higher plants and some fungi and protozoa.When the mitochondrial cytochrome pathway is inhibited,AOX could alleviate the electron transport process in mitochondria,providing energy and maintaining a much-needed metabolic balance by directly reducing O2 to H2O.AOX,induced by a variety of metabolites and signals,plays an important role in plant stress tolerance,and is also involved in cell respiration and photosynthesis.At present,the research on AOX was being deepened gradually,and the related achievements were also outstanding,but there were few comprehensive reports on the results of AOX research.This review summarized the structure and the latest research progress of AOX,hoping to provide reference for the subsequent study of AOX.
