Abstract:
Using the paraffin section technique,under light microscope,the roots,stems,leaves and other vegetative organ anatomical structures of Portulacaria afra were observed,in order to explore the structure of vegetative organs of the characteristics of drought resistance.The results showed that the roots and stems of Portulacaria afra were with secondary growth,producing periderm and secondery vascular tissue.There were many big water cells in the cortex of roots and stems,marrow of stems,and mesophyll of leaves.There were abnormal cells dyed into red-brown or dark-grey in roots,stems and leaves.There were a few cells with cluster crystals in stems and leaves.The aperture of catheter was bigger and there were many axial direction wood parenchyma cells in the secondary xylem of roots.There were many starch grains in the parenchyma cells of stems,and surface of stems was with concentrated small papillae.The leaves with thick cuticle on the surface were fleshy thick and isobitateral.The stomata were paracytic type.Some characteristics were relative to drought resistance such as bigger aperture of catheter and developed wood parenchyma of roots,many water cells in roots,stems and leaves.
